A day on the water is better with fewer people on the boat. You get more time in the water, more time with the captain, and a day that feels like it’s yours.
So we put together a list of Virgin Islands charter companies that keep their groups small and say so right on their websites. All ten are independently owned, most run a single boat, and a lot of them are captained by the owner. They’re ranked by the smallest group size they list.
Each operator is ranked by the maximum number of guests listed on its own website, smallest first. When two had the same number, the one that applies it to every trip ranked higher. We also gave credit to owners who captain their own boats and to companies that share prices and trip details up front. Everything was checked in August 2026.
Nobody paid to be on this list. We haven’t been out with these boats ourselves, so think of it as a guide to who keeps things small, not a review or a safety rating.
Max Charters
Max Charters takes the top spot because six guests is the limit on every sailing trip they run. It’s a small sailing business with one boat, a Hanse 445, and owner Pete Graziano has run it since 2023. Their site also says there are no hidden fees or fuel surcharges.
Rocknrolla St John Boat Charters
The owner is also your captain, and every trip is private. The smaller boat takes up to six people and the bigger one takes eight. In his words: “I focus on small groups to deliver quality and create the most memorable experiences above and below the water.”
Lion In Da Sun Charters
Up to six guests, listed right next to the price so you know what you’re getting. They’ve been taking locals and visitors out since 2003.

Ocean Bliss Charters
Every trip is private, for up to eight guests. Captain Andrew Cooper owns and runs the boat, and it’s a small family business run by native British Virgin Islanders. They’ve been at it since 2019.
Blue Water Charters VI
A power catamaran for up to eight, and your group always has it to yourselves. There’s a fuel meter on board, so you only pay for the fuel your trip actually uses. Captain Sara has about 20 years at the helm and a master’s in biological sciences.
Buck Island Charters
One of a handful of companies the National Park Service lists for trips to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Their trimaran, Dragonfly, is private only, for up to eight. Their bigger boat could hold 36, but they cap it at 20 so everyone has a better day. Captain Heinz and his son, Captain Carl, have been running trips since 1968.

Cloud 9 Sailing Adventures
Private trips top out at 10 people on a big sailboat, so there’s plenty of room to spread out. Captain Jason Beasley sailed the first Cloud 9 down from Texas in 2004, came back after Hurricane Irma wrecked his boats in 2017, and still sails out of Cruz Bay today.
Anne Bonny Charters
Up to 12 guests with two crew on every trip, so there’s always someone around to help. They also run shared trips on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which works well for solo travelers and couples who don’t need a whole boat. Co-owners Jared and Daisy bought her in 2019 and spent a year restoring her.
Local Legend Charters
Coast Guard certified for up to 12, and the BVI day trip is priced for a group of six. Owner Christopher Kenneth Klein was born in Tortola and comes from a family of Olympic sailors, so sailing these waters really does run in the family.
Local Mocean Charters
Private, custom trips for up to 12 on a 35-foot Intrepid. Captain Tony was born and raised in the Virgin Islands and grew up on Water Island, just off St. Thomas.
Honorable mention: Eighth Flag Charters on St. Croix keeps every tour private and never adds strangers to fill the boat. Their site doesn’t list a maximum group size, so we couldn’t rank them, but they’re worth a look.
Run a small boat in the Virgin Islands and list your group size? Let us know. The list is still open.
