island-wide blackouts this year

We know there have been a lot more outages than this. This number only counts the big ones. That means all of St. Thomas, all of St. John, or both islands lost power, and the news reported it.
Outages in just your area happen way more often, and most never make the news. That’s why we made this page. We want to keep a better count.
Power went out where you are? Tell us here. It takes 30 seconds.
Your power went out?
The news only covers the big ones. Your reports help us count all of them. We only show your area, never your name.
Reports from people on the islands show up here after we check them, usually within a day.

What it costs
This is our best guess. It counts money businesses lose while the power is off, plus food that goes bad at home. It leaves out a lot, like broken appliances, generator gas and lost bookings. So the real number is probably higher. Tap “How we got this number” to see the math and change it.
Businesses: The Virgin Islands made about $4.67 billion in 2022 (U.S. government numbers). St. Thomas and St. John have about 53% of the people, so we start with $2.47 billion a year. That's about $282,000 every hour. A lot of hotels, the hospital and big stores have generators, so we guess half of business stops when the power goes out.
Homes: About 22,000 homes. If the power is out 4 hours or more, we count some food going bad in each one.
How we add it up: For each big blackout we multiply the hours by the hourly number. If only St. John was out, we count about 14% of it, since St. John is about 14% of WAPA's customers here. A day of rotating outages counts as 1.5 hours of everyone being out, because only a few thousand homes are off at a time. Partial outages and ones we couldn't confirm count as $0.
For business owners
Put in a few numbers and we’ll do the math for you.
This is a rough guess. With a generator we guess you lose about a quarter of your sales instead of all of them. Nothing you type here gets saved or sent anywhere.
These are the people who can fix this. Let them hear from you.
Tell them what the outages cost you. All their emails and phone numbers are on one page.
The Public Services Commission oversees WAPA. Call 340-776-1291 on St. Thomas or email psc.info@psc.vi.gov.

When the power goes out
When the power goes out, locals get up to 30% off to use the facilities at Blackbeard’s Castle and The Mary Anne Boutique Hotel.
Up to 30% off for locals while the power is out. Generator power, so the lights stay on.
Up to 30% off for locals while the power is out. Generator power, so the lights stay on.
Both are businesses Houseful Co. works with.
Every outage on this page comes from the VI Daily News, the St. Thomas Source, the VI Consortium, WAPA’s own updates, or what WAPA told the Senate. Each one links to the story.
If the power comes back and goes out again the same day, we count it once. We only show how long it lasted when the news reported both the start and the end. Outages marked “Not confirmed” are on the list, but we don’t count them in any of the totals.
Who made this? Houseful Co., a small marketing company that works with businesses in the Virgin Islands. We’re not part of WAPA or the government. We made this page because the outages hurt the businesses and families we know here.
